Out of the Mouths of Babes

living_nativityOn a cold Monday morning in December, my second grade students sat cross-legged in a circle while sharing their stories about their family weekend ventures.

One excited chap told of his family’s trek to a living nativity display on the lawn of our state capitol. He meticulously painted a picture for us by including minute details of the yuletide ceremony.

The children listened intently as he mesmerized them with descriptions of the animals, Mary and Joseph, the wise men, the costumes, and lastly, the presence of the precious baby Jesus cradled in a manger of hay.

With wide-eyed innocence, one half-listening little fellow came to life and tuned into the conversation. With a concerned look on his cherub faceconfused_boy he cried out, "What did Tommy say?"

Calmly and patiently, I explained to the alarmed little daydreamer, "He was telling us about the baby Jesus in the manger.

His eyes bugged out as he grabbed his head. In astonishment he cried, "You mean there’s been ANOTHER one born?"
