RITUALS

What small ritual in your life might seem insignificant to others yet brings you untold enjoyment?

As I pondered this question, I initially thought “mowing the lawn”!  I feel challenged in keeping straight rows as I watch the higher level of green blades diminish to meet the even “flat-top” of the freshly mowed area.  (Sounds a little obsessive-compulsive, wouldn’t you agree?)

A Couple of Personal Obsessions

I then considered my daily walks through my quiet neighborhood.  Besides reviving my body and mind, the jaunt gives me time to think private thoughts, make mental lists, and give thanks to my God for the countless blessings he continues to pour on me.

However, one ritual that I WILL NOT forgo is a deep-soaking HOT bath at the end of each day.  A shower is no comparison.  Taking a shower is an act of personal hygiene.  Tub bathing could be considered a spiritual cleansing.

Here's How I Do It

First, I plug the hole and twist the handles completely to HOT!  NO COLD!  I then pull the shower curtain closed to capture all that glorious steam.  After 1-2 minutes, I adjust the stream of water to warm.

Once the tub is at least half full, I shut the water off and perform the “Big Toe Test” for temperature.  If the water is still a might hot, I WAIT a few minutes.  Don’t be tempted to run cold water into it.  It will diminish the sauna effect of the captured steamy cloud!

The Warm Plunge

Ready for entry!  I slightly pull the curtain open just enough to step in.  With both feet in the stew, I stand a few moments with eyes shut and breathe in the warm mist.  I now squat and slide under the water with my shoulders and neck against the end of the tub.

Once stretched out, I dip a hand towel in the drink and place it across my chest and neck.  Aw-w-w-w!  I love it!  I often lie there until the water begins to cool off or other family members begin wanting to use my meditation pool for something as mundane as bathing.

That’s O.K.  I’ll go again in about 24 hours!
